On May 5th I threw a Wonderland Party here in my backyard- it was a spectacular hit!
We really went all out. There was a LOT of prep that went into this event- months of planning, days of scenery & prop construction, hours upon hours of crafting and shopping and decorating. We transported our guests into Wonderland.... as they entered through the Rabbit Hole, a blacklight tunnel with signs reading "Which Way??", and into our garden of painted red roses, flamingo croquet court, long tables of stacked tea cups, and a life size mushroom set piece to climb on top of! They played croquet and chess and cards and other games, drank tea aplenty, ate a lot of cookies and cake, watched on TV inside every Alice movie version imaginable, danced, painted roses, played with our pet white rabbit and doormouse, smoked hookahs, danced some more- a MAD time was had by all. And the costumes were amazing!

I added a few photos of the party to the groups album: http://amadteaparty.tribe.net/photos
You can see ALLLLLLL of the galleries of photos at: http://madteaparty.shutterfly.com/
...where you can get a better look at all the characters that showed up throughout the whole day and night of the party, see closeups of the set, and enjoy in all the madness that was had!!! Go look and see!

Also, more pictures and commentary in the complete post in my journal, check it out: http://chrysarose.livejournal.com/74909.html

I'm throwing the Wonderland party of my dreams next month. The most fun is planning all interesting ways to bring the theme to life! I am always looking for more inspiration- so it would be wonderful if anyone out in Wonder-Cyber-Land wants to offer their ideas!

A sample of things I have planned so far:
Building a Rabbit Hole Tunnel for all the guests to enter through to the garden
Serving tea (of course!) in a hodgepodge of odd teacups & teapots
Playing Croquet (with flamingos, you know)
Serving "EAT ME" cookies and a huge lopsided tiered cake
(Also on the menu of ideas so far: Traditional Tea, tea sandwiches, scones, etc... Mushrooms, Oysters...)
Possibly building a giant mushroom "set piece" for guests to sit on, complete with hookah
Decorations: Card Suits, Chess/Checkerboard Patterns, Oversized Colorful Flowers, Flamingos, Mushrooms, Clocks & Pocketwatches, Keys, Painted Red Roses

There will be several versions of movies, music videos, and video games playing inside. I have the Disney Soundtrack to play, but am looking to find more theme-appropriate Wonderland related music.
There will be a costume contest with cash prizes- although I haven't decided what the best way to go about doing this is.... Ballots for guests to decide? Or judges? And what would be an awesome prize besides only cash?
Any ideas in the way of activities or games or other party attractions I can have?

Anyway... My imagination can only go so far all by myself-- please help me brainstorm if you can! :)

I've had a soft spot for Wonderland for quite some time.
I remember once...a loooong time ago (circa early 80's)...Going to Dickens Faire in SF with my parents, and they had built a walkthrough exhibit of wonderland. The Tea Party was there, you could play croquet with the Queen and her court, they even had a "shrinking room"...AND a Jabberwock! All I have is memories, since I've never found anyone with actual pictures of this (although I have spoken with other Dickens Faire folk about it, and they too remember it as well).
Something like this could be a fun theatrical event. Small? Yes. Compact? Yes. Appealing?...Who knows!

I just love swimming in possibility.

Alright, so we failed to come up with a plan for Mad Hatter's Day. But another important Alice date is fast approaching.

"Through the Looking-Glass" takes place on November 4th. Alice says to the black kitten, "we'll go and see the bonfire to-morrow." It isn't spellled out in the book, but the bonfire can only be for Guy Fawkes Day, November 5th.

http://www.bonefire.org/guy/

I seem to remember that this is mentioned in "The Annotated Alice", but I don't have a copy.

Anyway, this tribe has been quiet for a while, and I thought this date was worth mentioning.

And, to go OT for a bit... has anyone here read E. Nesbit? She was an Edwardian writer of some great (and some not so great) children's books. I especially recommend "The Enchanted Castle." I loved Nesbit when I was young, and that's how I learned about Guy Fawkes. The kids in one of her books recite a rhyme apparently known to generations of British children, and probably to Alice herself:

Remember remember the fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot.
I see no reason why gunpowder, treason
Should ever be forgot.

Here's more info on the Guy Fawkes, including the rhyme:
I'm also posting one of his Alice doll photos to the gallery here.

You don't have to like dolls to be blown away by his artistry. The dolls are made of felt. Alas, they're priced far, far out of most people's reach.

I see that Pooh is also mentioned in the description of this tribe. Wright has done an extensive group of Pooh characters in the past, but now they're available only on the secondary market. I'm sure a google search would produce some photos.

It was a musical and had Sammy Davis Jr. as the Catepillar, Anne Gillian and Carol Channing as the Red and White Queens, and I think Scott Baio had a small role as a lizard or something.

-- I'm generally a 'purist' (but not a snob!) when it comes to altering things, but I've been thinking long and hard about doing a large montage tattoo to involve some combining and even 're-angling' some of the Tenniel illustrations.

I've hesitated to do that (actually, 'angst-ed' would be more like it!), but none of the originals from *either* 'Alice' or '..Looking Glass' illustrations would work as-is for the space I have in mind. I have some 'working' ideas that wouldn't _change_ the drawings in form at all -- just would put pieces of illustrations together, or change *angles* (a horizontal 'flip,' here or a head/etc.-tilt there, _but_ NOTHING to *alter* drawings.

However, the idea of 'noodling around' with original artwork bothers me, as well.

Thoughts? Opinions?

Now, if you go by "Through the Looking-Glass," Humpty Dumpty explains that "It's called 'wabe' you know, because it goes a long way before it, and a long way behind it--"

That leads me to believe that "wabe" should be pronounced "way be." Hence, "outgrabe" should rhyme and be pronounced "out gray be." But I don't actually like it that way. If you recite it outloud, it throws off the rhythm of the poem.

So...this morning I unexplicably woke up with Danny Kaye singing "I'm Late" (the song of the White Rabbit) in my head.

Just thought I'd share....whee
======================
I'M LATE
Movie: Alice In Wonderland, 1951
(Fain / Hilliard)
Danny Kaye

Good morning Mr.Chatterbox
I’d love to stop and chatter
But in six and seven-eighth minutes
I must meet with the Mad Hatter
The mad, mad, mad, Mad Hatter
We must chat about a very important matter

^I’m late, I’m late, for a very important date
No time to say hello, goodbye
I’m late, I’m late, I’m late, I’m late
And when I wave, I lose the time I save
My fuzzy ears and whiskers
Took me too much time to shave
I run and then I hop hop hop
I wish that I could fly
There’s danger if I dare to stop
And here’s the reason why
You see, I’m overdue, I’m in a rabbit stew
Can’t even say goodbye, hello
I’m late, I’m late, I’m late^^

I’m off to see the Queen of Hearts
Who lives up in the palace
And the very moment I’m through with her
I’ve got a date with Alice
I can’t be late for Alice
Or the Queen of Hearts who lives up in the palace

(Rep from ^ to ^^ twice more, faster and faster)

Goodbye!

I recently had the pleasure of seeing an Off-Broadway production of Alice in Wonderland, only geared towards the Adults Only type of crowd. It was a musical comedy about Alice's sexual discovery....Wonderland is where she goes to learn about both the sexual world and herself. I know it's not exactly Lewis Carroll, but it was definitely enjoyable nonetheless, and it had a really good message: To understand yourself, is to know yourself :)
